We stay for 5 nights in the foothills at the ancient town of Carcassonne, which is said to be the finest example of medieval fortification in Europe. It is split by the River Aude into the Lower Town, with its splendid boulevards and the Upper or Old Town, with its double circuit of walls. The tiny principality of Andorra is a tax haven bordering both France and Spain. It lies high in the eastern Pyrenees and has a minimum altitude of 2950 feet. The highest bridge in the world, the Millau Viaduct, was designed by a British architect. Travel is via the Eurotunnel with the first and last night at the Novotel in Chartres. In Carcassonne we stay at the historic Best Western Hotel Le Donjon which is made up of 3 ancient stone houses situated within the medieval ramparts 150m from the Basilica.
