The northern fells of Cumbria provide dramatic scenery, history and culture.  Roman Britain, Bonnie Prince Charlie, William Wordsworth & Rudolph Hess are all part of the fascinating past of this area.  We stay for 4 nights half board accommodation at the 3* Best Western Shap Wells Hotel which has a peaceful, secluded setting near Penrith on the edge of the Lake District. A pretty waterfall and trickling stream running by the front door will leave you with no doubts that this is a place to get away from it all. All bedrooms are en-suite with TV, hairdryer, telephone and tea facilities.  The hotel has a lift to some floors and the extensive grounds and public rooms offer spectacular fell views.

Provisional Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart from the Midlands mid-morning, arriving at the hotel mid-afternoon.

Day 2: We will be travellng the length of Ullswater to the characteristic town of Glenridding where there will be an opportunity to take a boat trip (fare extra). We then continue to Keswick, situated at the northern edge of Derwent Water. We then return to the hotel via Ambleside, the northern edge of Windermere and Kendal.

Day 3: A leisurely excursion across Solway Firth to Dumfries, otherwise known as Queen of the South. We continue via Wanlockhead and Beattock to Moffat.

Day 4: Morning at leisure. Excursion via the South Tyne Valley and England's highest Cafe towards the highest town in England: Alston.
